Jen's Story: The Tale of Tumor Swift
You know Jen - she's one of the sunniest, most generous, inspiring women on the planet. Jen has managed a basket of chronic illness much of her adult life with amazing determination. Even with those long term body problems, Jen has always given more than she received - loving, caring, helping all of us. Now is the time for turn-about.
Diagnosed with a cerebral spinal fluid leak in June 2023, Jen sought treatment and answers for why she didn't get better. Months of suffering led to the discovery of a Pituitary Tumor in October. (Keeping humor is good medicine for healing tumors, so she named it Tumor Swift aka Swiftie.)
But wait, there's more! Tumor Swift is huge and complicated, so Jen got a miraculously fast referral to Mayo Clinic. Two weeks after the Pituitary Tumor was found she had her first meetings with Mayo experts who discovered a long string of connected endocrine problems involving multiple organs like the parathyroid and adrenal glands. (It's harder to come up with cute names for these suckers. Help wanted!)
That white blob is Jen's pituitary gland. It should be the size of a pea but the gluttonous overachiever is now the size of a walnut. Bad Swiftie! Go home tumor, you're drunk!
What was originally supposed to be one week for one "simple brain surgery" has turned into multiple 5 hour drives for testing, and extended AirBnB stays. As her case grows more complicated, the number of surgeries and time she needs to be at Mayo has tripled. In addition to medical bills, Jen now needs to pay for at least 3 weeks of lodging near the hospital, gas, and food expenses. Jen's fixed income is stretched past the max.
We've known Jen most of our lives. Her light shines so bright, it hurts to see her struggle so. We know you just feel the same, and have wondered how to help. Well, here we go!
