Hi, my name is Shelia Robinett and I am a colleague/friend of Rachael Harper Hatfield (Psychologist at the VA Medical Center in Huntington, WV) and her husband Jeremy Hatfield (OIF/OEF Marine Corp Veteran /Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputy).
On April 5th, Jeremy was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident and sustained significant injuries to his spine, left femur, and right hand. He has undergone multiple surgeries with success; however, he is currently paralyzed in both legs from the waist down. Although we remain hopeful, it is unclear whether or not the paralysis will be temporary or permanent. He continues to receive rehabilitative treatment at a specialized facility and it is anticipated that he will discharge in mid-July.
His wife, Rachael, has had to miss a significant amount of work and will continue to be unable to fully return until at least mid-July when he is able to come home. In addition to what can be presumed to be extensive medical bills there is a further complication. They are needing to sell their current home and purchase a home more suitable to accommodate Jeremy's current medical needs (no stairs, one-floor plan, wheelchair-accessible doorways/hallways/bathroom/shower/etc.), or a home that can be remodeled to meet his needs. They also have a sweet 8 month old German Shepard named Loki that needs some room to run at the new place.
As if the physical and psychological tragedy wasn't bad enough; it has created a significant financial burden that must be resolved (quickly) so that they may come home to an accommodating environment. I hope you will consider donating whatever you can afford to these two wonderful public servants during this difficult time. All donations will go to Rachael and Jeremy to help with all the costs to include the following: purchasing/selling a home (inspections, alterations, closing costs), and future modifications/additional equipment. Please share widely!
