Jeremy Needs Us: Facing Guillain Barre Syndrome

Never have I ever ..... imagined that I would be doing this. My son, Jeremy Lopez, was diagnosed in June 2024 with Guillain Barre Syndrome. This is a condition in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves. It can cause weakness, numbness, or paralysis.

It's rare and the exact cause is known. There is no cure. Recovery can take up to several years.

He spent 5 days in a Colorado Springs hospistal and then another 30 days in in-patient rehab to learn how to care for himself in the most basic of ways. He still struggles with extreme nerve pain and decreased range of motion. Holding a pen or a fork the 'right' way is no longer possible. Even trying to type is difficult.

That's his disease, his syndrome.

Here's his dilemma. His short term disability through work ended last year. He borrowed against his retirement. He has spent all his saviings. He's applied for disability. He got his SNAP card last week. A medical card should be coming soon.

He is trying to sell his car - he's unable to drive safely. The proceeds will be what gets him through until disability is approved, or denied and appealed.

Jeremy is 38 years old. He was in the work force for a little over 20 years. He's not afraid to work - his first job at 18 (which lasted 5 years) was at Tyson. He's always had a job. He's a great kid, and people seem to like him - or at least that's what I'm told by friends.

He's my son. I have helped him financially until I cannot anymore. My resources are exhausted. So, I'm asking friends, family, and strangers to help do what I'm unable to do - to help him financially.

The goal isn't much - although in this economy it seems it is.

We've discussed the amount. Neither one of us knows what is a good or fair amount. To get through the next 3 months, he thinks he can get by on $3,000, so that's the amount I'm aiming for.
