On February 17th, my son and I were in a horrific car accident when I became unconscious due to an epileptic seizure.My next memory was of being in severe pain when my hip dislocated after it was replaced in the OR.Then, I remember seeing an external fixator on my right lower leg.Then, a month later, I woke up.I kept telling them there was no way Simon was okay.Then, one day, they told me he wasn’t and I broke into a million pieces.He had broken his neck & was in a halo.His neck was his single injury.He was flown to Pensacola after the wreck and I was taken to The University of Alabama in Birmingham.I cannot express to you the pain in my chest that plagued me from that day.If we had not been fully restrained, we would not be here.I had bilateral collapsed lungs, a chest tube, a frontal lobe head bleed, a broken neck, a broken back, blood clots in my arm and hips, 2 right femur fractures, bilateral tib/fib fractures and a huge scalp laceration.Simon and I had only spent a handful of nights away from eachother before the wreck.I cannot tell you how excruciating it was to be a nurse and not be able to be there for my son when he was as injured as he was.The news of his injury will haunt me forever.I was able to spend the night with him the week I was allowed to walk again.Recovery has been long and painful.I have been left unable to work, in the midst of a divorce.I am walking much better but am awaiting a disability decision.Simon and I are able to see eachother every day, these days, and my heart needs it.I have missed him so much and he has missed me.This has been the most gut wrenching year and being unable to work does not help.I had already been seeking disability due to cptsd & then the accident happened.
