On Monday April 19th, 2011 I heard the words you have cancer for the first time, I was 31 years old and I kicked cancer’s booty. On Tuesday September 29th, 2015 at 36 I heard those words again.
In 2011 I chose aggressive treatment. I had a double mastectomy and 6 chemotherapy treatments. I understood this was no guarantee against relapse. I gave myself the best odds I could. I am making the same choice for aggressive treatment again. I found the lump early and the prognosis is good. On 10/14/2015 I had surgeroy to remove the mass a fist size portion of my chest wall and a port placement for chemotherapy. I will begin 4 chemotherapy treatments and 30 to 40 radiation treatments as soon as I am cleared by my surgeon and oncologist to do so. This should be 11/18/2015 if all goes according to plan.
I have insurance, but even with insurance cancer treatment is not cheap. I am responsible for all copays and 20% of procedures and treatments until my max out of pocket is met.
January 2017 I broke the same rib for the 5th time. The radiogists compared xrays and found cancer in the rib. A PET showed cancer in my lover, thigh, and rib.
I am on chemo and have had 20 more radiation treatments. I will be in chemo as long as my body responds to treatment. I can live this way for years. I am hopeful and grateful for each day I wake up.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story.
