Jet surgery 1 of 2

Peanut and I need help to help Jet fairly urgent in a window of time. Some of you might know Jet. He’s the little fella Peanut (Wombat) chose to be a part of the family. In the last 9 months Jet has had quite a lot of health issues.

I had no idea until he had these issues that his health issues are due to how humans bred these creatures to be cuter. To have their ears down and a shorter squatter face. That made me so cross when I found out but that's beside the point.

End of last year before, it started. Firstly sinus infection destroyed his right nose cavity. After seeing too many vets, we finally saw one who ordered a CT scan to show what was actually happening. We tried to avoid surgery and euthanising, despite the complications of getting there, it was resolved with an emergency surgery by Dr Jing at Unusual Pet Vets and the wonderful team there in February / March.

About 5 weeks ago, however, he started losing weight rapidly and his energy was going. An emergency visit to the vet, we requested a second CT scan thanks to the suggestion of a medical friend as it did not look he could cope with another surgery. It had been 6 months since the last CT scan so any progression on the guesses being made one were clear. What was found both ears were completely filled with infection. The worst thing was he was disappearing rapidly no matter how much I fed him and that he ate. Thankfully it meant he didn't need a tooth removed as well as originally suggested.

So Dr then advise to get a wee sample to see why he was losing the weight. Based on that result, he was treated with antibiotics for the infection, kidney medicine and pain relief.

Thankfully the last 3 weeks, he started to gain weight and last week has returned to more than his normal "love me" self which has prompted our request for help now. His vet has advised that despite how we were looking at palliative and progression of the infection, he is now a candidate for the surgeries.

Although we tried to avoid surgery as much as possible. I now feel confident from how he happy and back to himself and from my research, that I need to give him the best chance to solve the problem. Unfortunately the cost is a lot for just one. It has been advised he needs two surgeries. One for each ear. Each surgery costs $2738 and $2984.

I know it may sound ridiculous to someone spend all this time, and energy and money on a rabbit over the last 9 months, but I don't know what else to do. Getting further advice from the rabbit community tonight, we may be able to delay the second surgery for some months.

I also have to say there is a risk he may not wake up from surgery, but if you can spare anything to help us get this done in the next week or week after, we would be so grateful.

Thank you and love, Robyn, Peanut and Jet
