Go Jiaqi Zheng! USA Rio Olympian
Donation protected
Dear friends, supporters and table tennis compatriots,
In the last 12 months, my lifelong dreams have been coming true step by step. In the 2015 US Nationals, I accomplished my first goal as the US Woman’s National Champion. In May, I qualified in the 2016 North American Olympic Trials and became an US Olympian for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
My name is Jiaqi Zheng. I arrived in the United States when I was 17 years old. I worked hard and competed within the US as well as internationally with a clear goal in my mind: being on Team USA. There are many talented competitors here in the US. To win, it takes a fusion of physical ability, technical competency, mental acuity and an overwhelming will to succeed.
I follow a physical regimen of exercise every single day. I worked daily with our excellent coaches here at ICC to improve my table tennis skills in strategy, tactics, and foundational as well as advanced techniques. To make certain I can put what I practiced into use on the table during competition, I travel all over the world to participate in tournaments and training sessions. This is critical as I need to compete against as many athletes as I can to prepare myself for all advanced playing styles. I regularly spend some time in Asia and Europe for intense training and learning the latest table tennis skills.
Table Tennis in the US is not a commercialized professional sport. Athletes are not funded and must pay their own way. In many cases, a choice must be made between participation in a personal improvement opportunity such as participating in a tournament or training camp as vs. generating income by coaching or fulfilling employment obligations. Sadly for the sport, the reality is that many of athletes must choose income over achieving new horizons.
I am going to the Rio Olympic Games this summer, these games represent a tradition going back to ancient times and only happens once in 4 years. I want to take advantage of this rare and precious opportunity as part of Team USA to perform at my best representing the United States on this highest stage of table tennis. As preparation for Rio, I plan on competing in the ITTF sanctioned Australia Open and join Olympic Training Camp in China. This will require a considerable amount of expense including travel, coaching and the tournament fees. For this, I am seeking your support.
First, let me thank you for spending the time to read this appeal. Second, any contribution large or small is deeply appreciated and every dollar will be making a difference.
