Jim and Katie Hauck

Donation protected
On February 2nd, Jim and I traveled to Las Vegas to visit my son Tyler, who was in critical but stable condition. Tyler lives with Katie Hauck, Jim’s daughter. On February 5th, while on the way to visit Tyler in the hospital, Jim and Katie were involved in a horrific motor vehicle accident.

Both Jim and Katie were brought to the University Medical Center (UMC) in Las Vegas, which is a Level 1 trauma center. Katie’s car was involved in a collision with a pickup truck, she suffered a broken femur along with a broken foot, for which her recovery time will be upwards of three months.

More pressing, however, is my brother Jim—his pelvis was fractured on impact, his spine broken in three locations (T1, T7, and T11), a broken hip, ribs, kidney lacerations, and a brain bleed. On top of this, after undergoing a critical surgery to repair his pelvis, he has developed pneumonia in the hospital. Thankfully, he has not been deemed paralyzed and is now communicating through simple commands, such as nodding his head and hand squeezes.

So this is a hard pill for me to swallow, asking for help, but for the well-being of my brother’s family, I’m asking for help. Financially, emotionally, spiritually, whatever you can contribute will go a long ways towards recovery for my brother and his family. To say the least, this is a long road ahead—Jim will no doubt be in Las Vegas for recovery for upwards of a year. At the very least, initially, he must be immobile for the first few months, after that, he will be in a recovery/rehab facility.

As you know, our family has been through so so much. With the death’s of my son Brandon, our brother Michael, our stepfather Don, The death of Karen’s brother John , mother Cybil, Aunt Crystal, and Uncle Alvie all which occurred within a 2 year span. We feel so grateful that Jim and Katie are alive, by the grace of God.

Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers that we’ve received this past week, we truly are humbled by the outpouring of love, phone calls, text messages. It truly is amazing to know so many people are rooting for us!

Karen has set up a Caring Bridge website for Jim and Katies recovery progress so that you can check in on their progress for yourself.
