The name Jim Powers is synonymous with hard-working, dedicated, and go-getter. The man would work until the day he died if he could! On February 14th, Jim was involved in an automobile accident that ultimately left him with an undiagnosed broken hip. After a few days of rest, Jim thought his hip was just heavily bruised went back to work. The pain was excruciating, but his work ethic took over and he had a job to attend.
After dealing with agonizing pain at work for two weeks as a dedicated employee does, he and his family decided that he needed to see a doctor and get a second opinion. With one look at his x-ray, the specialist declared him misdiagnosed and said that he had a shattered hip needing a full hip reconstruction and replacement.
Unfortunately, Jim's hip was so swollen and battered that the surgery had to be postponed so his body could begin to heal and ensure the hip replacement would be a success. So Jim couldn’t return to work, both sending Jim into a depression and putting a hardship on his wife and finances.
After a few months of Jim being virtually sedentary, his family noticed a severe decline in his cognitive abilities. He was forgetting things he’s had memorized for years- numbers he’s had memorized for 20+ years, passwords that he used daily, and as a well-spoken individual, the last straw was when Jim was struggling to find the right word and frequently stumbling over himself trying to form coherent thoughts. On April 18th, his wife, Cindy took him to the emergency room after he forgot what he was doing while talking with a friend on the phone.
Once Jim was admitted to the hospital and underwent an overwhelming amount of tests, the family began to understand the gravity of the situation. Two of the four arteries to his brain were fully blocked and one was 95% blocked severely restricting blood to his brain—which had resulted in multiple strokes. While the family was relieved to have answers time was of utmost importance!
Within 24 hours the doctors and surgeons scheduled Jim to undergo emergency neurosurgery.
On April 19th, Jim went into surgery to have a stent put into one of his arteries opening it up to get blood flowing back into his brain. Due to the complete blockage, the other two would remain blocked as they’re beyond repair.
While the surgery was incredibly successful and immediately Jim’s cognitive abilities improved he still has to go through rehabilitation to get back to where he was before the strokes. In addition to the rehab, the stent requires Jim to be on blood thinners for 3 months making it impossible to operate on his still shattered hip Jim will be out of work for quite some time.
While Jim has a long road ahead of him that will not be easy, he is surrounded by family and friends that share his new found “I can do this!” attitude. This exemplifies his strong-willed and do-what-it-takes attitude. His family will be there when he needs a bit of external support to keep pushing forward.
As the sole provider of income for his wife and son living at home—Jim’s short-term disability is coming up short leaving a gap where his income used to be. Any amount graciously donated will be used to help cover medical expenses (where insurance falls short), mortgage payments during this time, and general living expenses for Jim and Cindy.
The Powers family thanks you for your support, prayers, and love during this incredibly tough season of life.
