Jinseong Lee - Recovery after Hate-Crime

Donation protected
Hello,

On Friday, March 19th, 2021, my friend of twenty years, Jinseong* (name has been changed, due to safety reasons), was thrown down a flight of concrete steps at her work place. She works as a care assistant and house keeper in Minneapolis, Minnesota at a care facility that cares for Korean elders. Jinseong and I have been friends for twenty years; we went to high school together in Minneapolis. Jinseong is a transracial Korean adoptee, one of 20,000 here in Minnesota. She and I are both Korean adoptees, and met in high school. She is a hard worker and has a huge heart, loves animals, and loves helping people. Jinseong cares very much about ensuring that the Korean elders she serves are well taken care of and she goes out of her way by spending time with them outside of her shifts, spends her own money on them if they need something, and follows their care plans diligently.

At around 11:45 AM on Friday, March 19th, she called me, sobbing hysterically. She told me that someone had shoved her down the concrete steps in a stairwell at her work place. I asked her to co-regulate with me, and then asked her if the stairwell at her work had any security cameras (there were no cameras in the stairwell.) She stated that she had heard footsteps, and then felt a "forward motion" after being pushed.

Jinseong stated that she blacked out, and hit her head. Her glasses flew off of her face, and are broken on one side. She has severe bruising on her forehead, cheeck, a huge lump/bruise on her head, bruising on her shoulder, pelvic area on the right side, knees, and other parts of her body that hit the concrete ground, as well as shoulder and neck pain. She did not see the perpetrator, as she was in a state of shock and had blacked out temporarily. She left work early, and I went to her home later that night at around 5:30 PM. Jinseong and I went to the hospital at the U of M in Minneapolis, as she began to "see spots" and had a severe headache. While at the hospital, Jinseong had head and spinal CT scans, and we also filed a police report, stating that she assumes it is a hate crime/targeted crime because incidents that were racially motivated happened near and at her work place.

In the area where her work is that serves Korean and a few other Asian elders, it is a very poverty stricken area and has lots of crime. Several of the Korean workers AND elders have been victims of verbal and physical assaults. A woman Jinseong works with had her arm broken in two places and was robbed by a group of men. Several of the Korean/Asian workers at the center were followed and called racial slurs. Jinseong was told to get off the elevator and called "Corona" several times, spat at, and texted me after each incident. She told her supervisor, however, received no support/follow through. Jinseong did file a work incident report so that this incident was documented, and she/we are working with an investigator. All that we do know is that she was attacked, and is one of multiple incidents of Asian Americans who have been verbally and physically assaulted. We will update with details after we speak with investigators. We also spoke with an Asian American journalist about her story already to bring attention to the violence and known physical and verbal assaults that have happened to Asian Americans in Minneapolis/Saint Paul, and near and at her place of work.

Jinseong was diagnosed with a severe concussion as a result of her injuries. This is even more concerning, as she already has  Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Jinseong does not feel safe returning to work, so she will not have insurance unless she goes through the state to get insurance, so as she heals from this traumatic incident, this financial support will be used for the following:

Rent, utilities, bills, car loan, medical fees and bills, college loans, food, and nerve damage, attention, and migraine medications (common for those with TBI), and legal/lawyer fees, as she is going to be getting legal aid for this situation. She is also still wearing her glasses that are broken on one side, so she needs new glasses, as well. These funds will support her as she receives support in this very emotionally and mentally traumatic and draining situation. I will be withdrawing the funds, and sending directly to her, as she wants to have one less thing to manage, and will send her receipts and updates of the financial support when I send her the funds. Jinseong is just one of many Asian Americans who have been significantly affected by the increase in violence towards Asian Americans. Thank you for your support. In solidarity <3
