Teaching the Maasai in Africa
I am a 6th grade Social Studies teacher at Renner Middle School, in Plano, Texas. I have been given a rare opportunity to go back to Kenya and teach the children of the great native Maasai tribe. I am funding the entire journey myself.
Last May, my generous students, families, and faculty at Renner donated clothing and school items for young orphan boys, and I was able to deliver those items in person at the Joy Divine Boys Home in Nairobi, Kenya. I went to Kenya with MegaCare, which is the outreach vehicle of my church, The Potter's House.
I also met the great Maasai. Our church funded the drilling of a new bore hole that provided fresh water for over 1,500 Maasai, who live in the Great Rift Valley. Because of the fresh water, mothers will no longer have to walk half a day to get water from a muddy stream, and the oldest daughters will no longer have to babysit with their young siblings at home. The girls can now go to school!
I asked one of the Maasai elders, "What can I get for you? What do you need?" The answer was "a volunteer teacher." I asked again and receieved the same response--a volunteer teacher. I believe that this is what I am here to do. I want to teach these precious children with all my heart. Thank you so very much.
