Joanie Miller was ready for the fight of her life. As a single mother of two small children, her primary goal was to give her kids a home full of laughter, love and fun.
On Sept. 21, 2018, after spending a month in the hospital, 40-year-old, Joanie was diagnosed with stage 4 leiomyosarcoma, a very rare type of cancer that travels through the bloodstream and attaches itself to soft-tissue/organs. She underwent extensive surgery to remove tumors on her heart, inferior vena cava, kidney and lung.
Before she could even begin therapies like chemo, she was fighting to get insurance to cover the cost of ongoing treatment and already had roughly $500k in medical bills from her surgery and month-long hospital stay.
After three months of fighting to get assistance for the cancer treatment, Joanie finally saw an oncologist on Dec. 27. Her doctor was coming up with a game plan to try and keep this cancer at bay, so she could watch her kids grow up. Her treatment was to begin in January 2019.
On Dec. 29 at 1 a.m., Joanie passed away from leiomyosarcoma.
As a single mother to 11-year-old Madison and 8-year-old Austin, Joanie worked hard to make ends meet. A day before she passed away, she asked her oncologist when she could return to work and if she could work through treatment. She said that she was “hoping to make it until my kids turn 17.”
Joanie had no savings, no life insurance and like many Americans, lived paycheck-to-paycheck.
