Help Joanne, get back on her feet

Okay, so I've been a paraplegic for 10 yrs. In 2009, I was shot and paralyzed. When doctors told me I wouldn't walk again, I was sad but I was also happy. I knew seconds after being shot that I was paralyzed. I knew there was a chance I'd never walk again, especially if I didn't get to the hospital in time to save my life. It was touch and go for a couple weeks, but when I finally awakened from my induced coma, I was happy. Happy to be alive, to have my family and friends around supporting me and pushing me to work hard so I could go home.

Now in 2019, I'm 30, I have my own home with my all my pets. My mom and step dad bought an acreage when I was 14 so I was able to place my house on an empty spot in their yard. That way I could live close to my mom and get the help I need.  Ive been here almost 2 years and I love it, even though I've had a few household setbacks. The roof leaks and it isn't wheelchair accessible at all. But I know I want to live here. Me being here has also helped my family a bunch. I just wish I could do more for them, I want to help my family. So I'm asking you for help. I've been reading on places around the world that do the treatment/epidural stimulation, for SCI. What I desire more than anything, would be the chance to walk again.

It costs close to $60000 dollars, they have amazing programs with different therapies which will benefit in my full recovery. After the treatment, I will work very hard with physio therapists to regain muscle strength in my lower body. Within 2 years I'll be back on my feet, but for now, I spend my days at home either in my bed or in my chair in the dining room or outside in the sun. I'm thinking about getting some renovations done so at least I can do more for myself when I'm alone. When I got this place, I didn't really have my own place. I had my own apartment for a few years that was completely accessible, unfortunately the whole building got infested with bedbugs so I moved in with my mom. I always planned on getting another apartment somewhere accessible but since I couldn't find another place with everything I needed, I thought I could just get a trailer and instead make it my own. It's small, but I dont need anything fancy.

I'll be getting a new wheelchair soon. A couple years ago a friend and I were strolling back from the movie theater and a small bump in the street caused my chair to flip over and my front wheel is now a little wobbly. So you can imagine how excited I am for a new chair. Then at least I can wheel myself fast without my wheel spinning out. If you're wondering, it wasnt bad enough of a fall that I hurt myself. The only pain I have is in my back. Mostly from spasms. I think they do that because they need exercise. I need physio therapy for my arms too now, from wheeling myself. It happens to everyone who used their arms a lot. If I could I'd just get physio and renovate, but I figure, go big or go home. Like that quote : "Why not reach for the moon, even if you miss you'll probably land among the stars."

I could always use the money to buy myself the equipment I would need to be physically active in and around my home. Such as a standing frame wheelchair and a chair/sling lift. Build a ramp on my deck. I would probably be just as happy, with the proper equipment to hell me be independent and fully mobile. I have seen people do some very innovative things when they have the means to do so. Making my home more accessible for myself, I think I could live without having to ask for hell to get my art stuff down, that way I can paint. Or getting ingredients together so I can bake or cook. At least being in the way wont be a problem if I'm helping out. What do you think I should do, stemcell treatment, or equipment upgrade?

Thanks for reading.
Faithfully yours
