Joe's Type 1 Diabetes Celebration

On Friday, November 1st 2019, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, a chronic autoimmune condition in which the body attacks its own insulin-producing cells. Insulin is the hormone that facilitates the movement of glucose from the blood into the cells for energy.  Because my body is no longer producing the insulin, I now need to take two kinds of injections, a daily base-level insulin and insulin with meals, so that my body can get energy from the food I eat. As part of my treatment, I must constantly monitor and balance my blood-glucose levels. If levels swing too high, I am in danger of long-term health complications. If they swing too low, I can be in immediate danger.

Covering all of the unexpected costs is a financial burden. I am fortunate to have basic health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. However I still need to meet my deductible, and there are costs associated with physician visits, lab tests, and supplies, including insulin and a blood-glucose monitor. In addition, the monitor requires an iPhone 7 or newer in order to sync the app with the monitor, so I will need to upgrade my phone. I have also had to miss over a week of work, putting me even farther behind. There will be costs associated with managing this for the rest of my life.

On the brighter side, I quit smoking. I am eating healthier than ever and practicing regular exercise and yoga. Type 1 is a 'self-awareness disease' and I am more aware of my body than ever before.
