On the morning on August 16th, Joel was in a horrible accident on his dirt bike. Unfortunately at the time Joel was not wearing a helmet. He suffered severe head injuries and was transported to the University of Alberta hospitals Neuro ICU.
The afternoon of August 16th Joel underwent surgery to help relieve pressure off his brain caused by injuries he sustained in the crash. This surgery will gave him the best chance of survival. Doctors are very cautious to predict his outcomes at the time, and things are being treated on a day by day, hour by hour basis. Currently Joel is showing very minimal responsiveness but things are still very early.
Anyone who knows Joel says he’s one of the toughest guys they know, and we all know if anyone can make it through this - it is him. Joel is the most selfless person you will ever met and would give anyone the shirt off his back. He’s passionate about his job as a heavy equipment operator and has big aspirations for his future career in the oil field industry. He loves his friends more than anything and often says that “his friends are his family”. Joel loves life and has so much left to do - he has to pull through this.
Chantelle has been at his bedside since the moment of the accident, and his immediate family is on their way from Nova Scotia
We are creating this fund for Joel to help with his recovery process as we are told will be extremely lengthy if his condition improves.
The doctors have said repeatedly that every case is different, so it’s difficult to say what will happen. But we know if anyone is deserving of a second chance at life, it’s Joel.
