On the evening of Sunday, November 12, 2017, the lives of Joe Lee, his three grandchildren, ages 1, 3, & 5, and their mother, Carol, changed drastically. They all became victims of an apartment fire. This accident has caused the family to be displaced from their home for 6 weeks while their apartment is being rebuilt.
Joe’s heroic actions saved not only his life, but the lives of his family. As the apartment was engulfed in smoke and the front door would not unlock. Joe tried to throw a chair through the front window but it did not break. His quick thinking and calm nature helped, and he was able to lead the family to the back bedroom. He attempted to open the window in this room, however, it was stuck. Joe was forced to punch through the window, and only then was he able to help the children’s mother through, and then hand each child through to their mother.
Once the children were safely through the window, he climbed out. This is not the end of the story though; Joe went back into the apartment with a Fire Extinguisher trying to put out the fire. Unfortunately, he was overtaken by the smoke and had to find his way back to the bedroom and evacuate the apartment completely.
The family is thankfully safe thanks to Joe’s actions. The youngest child needed to receive 1 stitch on her wrist, and the children’s mother had to receive 9 stitches. Joe suffered severe smoke inhalation, and received stitches on his right ear, and 24 stitches in his left arm. Had he not thought clearly and been focused on protecting his family, the damages could have been much more severe, and the story more tragic.
Please donate to help Joe and his family recover from this terrible accident, and please share this campaign as well, and encourage your friends to. Any funds donated that exceed what the family needs to recover, will be donated to the Red Cross to help another family in need. Thank you for your help!
