We are reaching out with a call to action. Our close friend, teammate and classmate, John Bonfield, was tragically and instantly killed on Saturday, May 9. John was traveling alone on I-95 in Virginia when another motorist crossed from the northbound into the southbound lanes, striking John’s vehicle head on.
John’s wife (Donna) and daughter (Alexis or "Lexi”) are devastated and in real need of our support right now. Lexi, whom John would describe as the “apple of my eye”, is a talented young swimmer (high school class of 2021) who has had her college recruiting process side tracked by the Covid-19 pandemic. As many of us can relate, one of John’s greatest joys was watching his daughter compete and succeed in the pool, and the entire family had been working tirelessly to prepare her for college, both academically and athletically. While we don’t know Lexi well, word is that she and her dad shared a similar sense of humor. If you knew John, that alone makes her quite unique. We will miss him dearly for many reasons but - as his friends and former teammates - none more so than the quick-wittedness and hilarity that he brought day in and day out, year after year.
John was 54 years old and grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. He came from a very humble, modest, blue collar background and absolutely cherished the opportunity to be a pitcher on the baseball team at Yale. He was also a member of the Yale Freshman Football team (aka "Bullpups"). We would always joke that he loved Yale so much that he decided to stick around an extra year or so. Other than baseball, John loved football, hockey (he took his entire family to see the 2013 Frozen Four / Yale Hockey National Championship in Pittsburgh) and all things Minnesota sports (Twins, Vikings, Gophers, etc.). A very talented web design, E-Commerce & Digital Media professional, John was both a strong team leader as well as a valuable, hands on consultant. However, his greatest passion was always his family, which needs our help right now. Please consider supporting them in whatever amount you can.
Enjoy some fun yet heartbreaking photos below, in remembrance of John ("33").
