On January 27th, 2021, John Powers (lovingly, "JP"), suffered a major hemorrhagic stroke at the age of 56, an incredibly rare form of a stroke for someone so young, which left him fighting for his life for 18 days at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC. Thankfully, he survived, but JP is now left with a long recovery journey ahead, as he has lost mobility on the majority of his right side of the body. JP is wheelchair bound and undergoing intense physical and speech therapy, having to relearn the basics of motor skills and cognitive function. While his spirits remain high (like those who know him would expect), resources for his care and recovery have run out and he is now back home needing our love and support. JP's insurance has dropped him and has stopped paying for the necessary intense inpatient therapy needed for someone recovering from such a major stroke. While he is progressing and working hard, we no longer have the funds to continue his intense medical treatments.

For those who do not know JP well, he led a long professional career at IBM as an architect in the IT industry. He studied and got his degree from Heidelberg University in Ohio, from where he originates. Prior to his stroke, JP was known for his affable personality, love of golf, and fierce loyalty to his friends. This serious stroke has unfortunately taken away JP's freedom and independence, and his daily routines are no longer what they used to be.
JP's current stability and care comes from his loving fiancé, Dana Wilkins, her mother, and his mother, Helen Powers. They are doing their very best to manage though the situation, which is not sustainable in current form. We are looking to raise money in order to get JP the care (and more importantly, rehabilitation) that he needs and deserves, and to help Dana establish a more normal daily routine with work and her responsibilities for her daughter.
Any amount you can give is vital and so appreciated. Please help this family recover and provide JP the resources he needs to get the medical and rehabilitation care to emerge from this tragic event.
