John’s parents were Thorald and Mary Stemmer.
He is survived by his wife Marianne, his four children, Matthew, Christopher, Shane, and Chelsea, daughters-in-law Megan and Nicole, and son-in-law Joseph. John was the loving grandfather of ten grandchildren: Mason, Preston, Madison, Payton, Kaitlyn, Ethan, Chloe, Logan, Monroe, and Elliot. John’s loving brothers were Mark and Matt Stemmer. Johns loving sisters were Mary Nabers and Ann Stemmer.
John graduated from the prestigious Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California in 1976 where he excelled in sports and was subsequently recruited by a number of Division 1 Colleges for his excellence in football. John achieved all American status as a college athlete while attending Golden West College before transferring to The University of Arizona where he starred as a defensive lineman.
On March 7, 1980, John entered the United States Navy where he was named the Navy League’s Most Outstanding Recruit in a class of 500. This award is given to the most outstanding graduating recruit who exemplifies enthusiasm, supportive attitude, and a willingness to help others during their training period, exceeding all Naval training standards. While in the Navy he served as a Hospital Corpsman and as an X-Ray Technician. It was in the Navy where he met his loving wife, Marianne, a fellow Navy veteran. Marianne instantly captured all of John’s love and attention. John and Marianne were married on July 25, 1981.
After leaving the Navy in 1983, he moved back to Southern California and began his long career in construction, working primarily as a mason. John always took pride in the work he did whether it was working on a million-dollar project at Lake Las Vegas or crafting one of his children’s class projects. John’s work ethic, skill set, and raw talent made him an absolute standout wherever he was employed.
John, Marianne and their children moved to Boulder City, Nevada in 1993. It was here where John naturally became the ultimate sports fan, cheering his four children on and gaining the attention from the crowd whenever in attendance. Spending time with his family and sharing his love of sports around the ‘big game’ became a priority and passion for John.
John had a huge heart and always took the time to talk with anyone that needed an ear or shoulder, whether it was his family, friend or coworker. When you spoke to John, you had his undivided attention and you always felt as if you and your thoughts were the most important thing to him. John was genuine and authentic and his heartfelt actions made you feel like a winner.
In addition to John’s heart of gold, John was a true patriot. John’s love of God, Family and country became self-actualized when he started his career with the Bureau of Reclamation and Hoover Dam. For 17 years John took enormous pride working for Hoover Dam and the coworkers he considered dear friends and teammates.
John left a huge legacy behind him setting an example for all of us to follow. John will be missed by all that came in contact with him.
