John Tabuai (Jnr)'s Kidney Transplant Journey

Donation protected
On behalf of John Tabuai (Jnr) aka John-Boy, our family would like to share John's story.
John was diagnosed with Kidney reflux at 11 years old. At this age he was advised to take Blood pressure medication. Over the years he has had constant health check ups and was told that his kidneys would deteriorate in his mid 20's and would need a kidney transplant. Prior to the transplant he would need to go on dialysis.
Over the years John has not let this stop or get in his way of trying to have a normal life. John enjoys hunting, fixing vehicles, fishing, camping, gardening, traditional dancing and all outdoor adventures especially with his family. The most he loves is to spend time with his Grandmother, Mum, siblings, nieces and nephews. John enjoys playing rugby league but due to his condition he can't play contact sports for a while.

In 2018 John was told that his kidney levels were low, that he would need to prepare for dialysis which has put him at a Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease . John and his partner travelled to Brisbane in 2019 to see his kidney specialist team, to get a fistula put in his arm. Since then John has been seeing the kidney specialist regularly via teleconference, or when the team travelled to community or in Cairns. John proposed to his partner in 2017 and was in the planning of his wedding. John has welcomed with his partner 3 beautiful boys which are all under the age of 4.

John has been unable to support his family financially as he is restricted to do certain duties. His partner is unable to work due to no childminding facilities in our community. But now she will be assisting John with his dialysis appointments.
In the last two weeks John has been advised that it is now time to go on dialysis as his levels are too low and will need to be on dialysis until they find a matching donor. Unfortunately this is a struggle due to his blood type is very rare as a negative blood group. He starts on the 21st September 2020.

We as a family have supported John throughout this time but now we are needing more financial support. John lives in a remote community called Mapoon which is 75kms out of Weipa. Weipa hospital is the nearest dialysis facility. John will need to travel to Weipa three days a week, for 4 hrs per day  for treatment. This has been very hard for John as he was very quiet about his condition and didn't want no one to know or treat him differently.

John's goals and what the funds will contribute towards:
- To get a reliable vehicle to cater for his little family of 5 (prefer 4wd due to unseal road between Mapoon - Weipa)
- Air-conditioning throughout their house (to prevent infections)
- Comfortable Bed and couch as John's need to relax after treatment and travel.
- Support for fuel expenses (Fuel is expensive at the moment our local bowser is apprx. $1.58 per litre)
- Also for when the time comes for the transplant he would need to travel to Brisbane with his family. QLD Health will only accommodate for John and an escort. He will be in Brisbane for up to 3 months and in Cairns for 1 month for recovery, he will need his little family to be there. Financially he will need funds to pay for their flights, accommodation and public transport to and from the hospital.

As a 28 year old father, John just wants this procedure to be over and done with so he can live a normal life with his family and start looking forward to marrying the love of his life.

We believe God works in mysterious ways and with Him anything is possible.
