John was a friend to everyone

John Guerra is a legend, and not just on the basketball court. Sure, he made basketball look easy whether it was shooting around with friends at the park or with hundreds of adorning fans watching his every move. But John truly made his impact off the court as it seems just about everyone who met him fell in-love with the remarkable young man.
I’ve heard stories the last two days about his contagious, goofy character and his ambitious approach to academics. I’ve been amazed to learn of the countless friendships he maintained and relationships he built. How he greeted everyone with a smile and a handshake or high five, whichever was most appropriate. That’s the thing about John. He just seemed to always know the right thing to say or do no matter his company or surroundings.
On a personal level, we knew John from his time in the gym with us. He became a leader to the younger athletes that looked up to him who wanted to work as hard as he did, and to the staff he became more of a peer and friend vs just a kid looking to train. We would come in early just to get extra time in with John or stay after hours because he was simply the type of person you could never get enough time with.
Our hearts go out to his entire family as we can’t imagine what they’re going through during this incredibly sensitive and difficult time. We are aching for the Florida community as well as the local basketball family who all lost an outstanding young man way too soon.
We are raising money for John’s family as we hope to lessen the burden even slightly during these impossible days to come as we all prepare to say our final goodbyes.
Fly high and watch over us JG, us as we’ll surely look to you for guidance in these days and months and years to come.
John, we miss you. John we love you. And John, we will always remember you.
