The Board of Directors and Members of the Reading Area Firefighters Museum are pleased to announce the institution of the First Annual John J. Zolomij Memorial Scholarship. This award will be presented to a current Berks County Junior Firefighter.

As a lifelong educator, Mr. Zolomij was a distinguished museum specialist and consultant. His unique skills lifted those around him, whether mentoring young people or serving friends and strangers in need. John was a dear friend and a valuable asset to our Museum.

It is a fitting memorial that this scholarship will provide a Berks County Junior Firefighter with the financial support needed to purchase firefighting gear or the books, materials and supplies necessary to continue their post-secondary education.

By the end of this year, all Berks County Volunteer Fire Companies will receive a packet with all the necessary information, details and application forms.

For those who wish to make an electronic contribution, a “Go Fund Me” account has been established for that purpose. We encourage family, friends or those who support our valuable Junior Firefighters to memorialize John Zolomij and assist us in supporting our young First Responders.

All contributions will go directly to this scholarship fund. We are truly pleased and excited about this scholarship offering and being able to recognize and assist our young firefighters as they continue their service to our communities.

We were honored to present our first annual John J. Zolomij Scholarship to Miss Meagan Reitnauer of the Eastern Berks Fire Department. Miss Reitnauer's dedication and commitment to service in her community are exemplary. We wish her continued success as she pursues her collegiate career in nursing. Pictured are John's wife and daughter and Miss Reitnauer surrounded by her family members and fellow firefighters. Congratulations!
