Johna's Journey

Johna Trahan's friends and family created this Go Fund Me account to support and assist Johna with the overwhelming costs of her ongoing and future healthcare expenses.

In 2011, Johna’s husband Jackie unexpectedly passed away from complications related to kidney disease. Johna has been a single parent since that time to Alex and Emily who were sixteen and twelve years of age at the time of Jackie’s death.

In 2013, a spot was found on Johna’s liver, and she was subsequently diagnosed with Genetic Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) liver failure. As a result of Johna’s liver failure, she also manages Esophageal Varices, Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP), Splenomegaly (enlarged spleen), and Diabetes.

Johna’s diagnosis deteriorated to the point that she was placed on a liver transplant list in February 2021. Johna’s condition, compared to other transplant patients, will determine when a viable liver is available for Johna to receive.

As a result of Johna’s condition, travel of more than two and a half hours from her home in Brookeland, TX to the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX is frequently required for her treatments and healthcare needs.

To help improve Johna’s condition, in June of 2021, she received a Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) to relieve the pressure of blood flowing through her diseased liver and to stop bleeding and fluid backup.

As a result of the TIPS procedure, Johna can no longer live alone or operate a vehicle because of the side effects that TIPS recipients experience. This immediately required Johna to be placed on medical disability. She is now completely dependent on family and friends for her day-to-day living and transportation needs.

Johna has a long road ahead of her. Her friends and I wish to appeal to you for your financial support to help relieve some of the financial burdens she is constantly facing. Again, it is unknown when Johna’s transplant will occur, but until that day, and for the remainder of Johna’s life, she will incur life-sustaining expenses.
