John David Zegeer Memorial Fellowship
Donation protected
The John David Zegeer Memorial Fellowship is being established to support the growth, development, and continuing higher education of persons entering the transportation profession. This fellowship will be an ongoing tribute to John’s outstanding contributions to the fields of highway design, traffic operations, transportation planning, and safety.
The fellowship will support the pursuit of full-time studies in eligible academic programs in highway design, traffic operations, roadway safety, and transportation planning.
The goal is for this fellowship to be supported in perpetuity by the income from donations that are made in John’s honor.
About John D. Zegeer
John Zegeer sincerely cared about others and the world around him. This was one of the primary reasons he devoted his professional life to transportation engineering – because by practicing it he would always have a direct, continuing and beneficial impact on the lives of everybody in the community where he happened to be working and, ultimately, on people throughout the world. At the time he joined the consulting firm from which he retired 20 years later, John said his reason for doing so was to “give back” to the profession by mentoring young people who were just entering it. John never wavered from this personal commitment: when he was asked near the end of his professional career what he would like to do in retirement, his answer was that he would like to teach others. The endowment that will support this fellowship is therefore meant to carry out John’s long-term wishes and to instill into next generations the genuine care for others that defined John and his relationships with those he knew and loved.
