Johnny Joyner

Donation protected
Johnny Joyner, oldest son of Melissa and Richard Joyner, was very seriously injured  two-weeks ago at the repelling tower at his prep-school in Marion, Alabama.  Johnny’s injuries include a ruptured lung, a shattered ankle, and extensive spinal damage.  A person with less fight in them would not have survived.  But the doctors are not sure Johnny will ever walk again; Johnny is sure he will.

A little about Johnny and his family:  Johnny is currently enrolled at Marion Military Academy which is the primary prep-school  for the United States Airforce Academy.  He is a 2019 graduate of Robinson’s International Baccalaureate program, is an Eagle Scout, and was one of Youth Sailing’s star instructors.  (Johnny is directly responsible for getting my son involved in sailing.)  Johnny recently received Congressional  appointments to both the US Naval Academy and the US Airforce Academy. For almost a decade the Joyner family has donated countless hours to our Youth Sailing program.  Melissa has run our summer sailing program the last two years and Richard has been our “go-to” for free fiberglass repairs to our fleet.  Both the Joyners have served in various leadership capacities in Youth Sailing.

This is a life changing event for the Joyners that I personally find hard to grasp.  The recovery will take years and the extent of Johnny’s injuries are such that the he won’t be able to come home for months.  Consequently, his parents have been living in hotels in Alabama for two weeks and Melissa will continue to do so for the next several months until Johnny can return to Tampa.  And before Johnny can live in their house, the Joyner’s house will have to be remodeled to accommodate a lifestyle change we can hardly imagine.

Although insurance should help with direct medical costs, the Joyners will still have staggering out of pocket expenses.  Rental cars, hotels, food, and the remodeling of their home are some expenses I can think of off the top of my head.  I’m sure there are many more I haven’t thought of.  We have set up a Go Fund Me site to collect donations to help the Joyners defray some of the extensive costs of this life changing event.

Please consider making a contribution to help the Joyners.  If ever there were a family that deserves the help of the our community, this is it.
