For those that do not know John Mcquaig, he is a loving husband, father of two and loyal brother to almost 400 Seminole County Fire Fighters whos been diagonsed with lung cancer. Those who know Johnny Mac can attest to his selflessness and courage day in and day out. His abundance of knowledge and desire to teach shows his true love for being an Fire Fighter/EMT.
I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to meet Johnny Mac in 2013 as a brand new Paramedic Student. I came into Seminole County station 22 in Fern Park one evening to study for my up and coming state test, not knowing me but five minutes he put his reading book down and taught me more in one hour than I learned in six months of school. Needless to say, I chose to precept at station 22 for the duration of the year. Johnny Mac was quick to accept me into their family and made me feel welcomed. Every endless story, and every call was a lesson that I would be able to take with me and to this day continue to use. He taught me to think and see beyond the basics.
It saddens me to great lengths that such an amazing man who’s worked so hard for others has been recently diagnosed with a cancerous lung tumor. Since I learned of his diagnosis I’ve pondered a million ways to show him and his family love and support through these tough roads ahead. There’s not enough I or anyone can do for Johnny, but here is my attempt to give back a tiny bit of what he’s given to me and I’m sure to coutless others. During his stay at the hospital I stood in his room as he told me that his diagnosis was a blessing in disguise. He went on to tell me that in his years of service he hasn’t been able to give his wife and kids the time they deserve and now he has that chance. He spoke of travels they dreampt to take and time they hoped to spend together. These funds raised will be for Johnny and his family to use towards treatments, bills, and what ever extra expenses. I set the bar high because I believe he deserves every penny.
To Johnny Mac, I cannot thank you enough for the support you showed me through medic school and teaching me more lessons than I could have imagined, for teaming up with Mike to give me my nickname and for always having faith. For the continued love and support you've always showed Dan and I, we honor you and wish you a speedy recovery.
