John Terry - Washington DC or Bust

Donation protected

My son (John Terry) known by his nickname Tre' -  is 12 years old, a 7th grader and a participant in the Africentric Youth & Families Rites of Passage Program in Southern California.  He has an opportunity to travel to Washington DC in June 2015 for a 7 day educational experience visiting the Capitol, White House, Smithsonian National Museum, Martin Luther King JR Memorial, African American Civil War Museum, Howard University and many more historical sites.   This trip has been planned and designed by the participants in partnership with Family Health & Support Network, Inc.  You can learn more about the program and organization by visiting their website at www.fhsnet.org/braaf (Rites of Passage Program) .  The cost of the trip is $1,500 per participant and as a single parent, I would love to travel with him to share this experience.  The cost includes airfare, ground transportation, hotel accommodations, and meals on each day of the trip.

John is an only child and has always strived for academic excellence.  He is a three time School Spelling Bee Champion and has placed 3rd in the Palm Springs Unified School District Bee twice.  He has received several 1st place awards for science projects and received a District Sweepstakes trophy and County Bronze Medallion.

When John entered into 5th grade, I received a surprising phone call from his school principal telling me that the California Standards Test (CST) scores just arrived at his desk and that John received a perfect score in the state math exam which is the first perfect CST score his school had ever received on any of their students.

When John graduated from elementary school, he was honored with two special awards and received the Gold Seal U.S. Presidential Award for Academic Excellence signed by President Barack Obama and the Principal Award for Outstanding Student.  He maintains a  3.5 GPA as a Gifted and Talented Educational (GATE) student and is an Associate Student Body (ASB) officer at his middle school.

Always determined to do his best despite being bullied by school classmates, John recently received 1st place in an essay on UJIMA - Collective Work and Responsibility which can be viewed on YouTube under the name JOHN AKA MELISIZWE  or below.

We are soliciting your support in this exciting opportunity and any amount would be greatly appreciated and would help us reach our goal for travel expenses.  If you are not able to give at this time, we certainly understand and ask for your prayers as we embark on this life changing journey.

With all sincerity and appreciation,
THANK YOU !!!
