On Friday, September 21, a fire broke out at the Joice Public Library and Community Center. The Joice Fire Department responded to the call around 3 am, and they were later joined by crews from Lake Mills, Fertile, Hanlontown and Forest City. The library was in the process of renovations, but we are unsure of the cause of the fire at this time.
Joice is a small town in north central Iowa, and the library is the heart of the community. The building and its contents are a total loss – all of the books, computers, additional resources and supplies. The Community Room was a place for people to gather for meetings, events, family gatherings, etc.
The library was a big part of growing up in Joice. It's where we'd go after school to check out books for free reading and for help with homework. Where we would play on the computer with friends. Where we would meet for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Where we'd go to see Santa and the Easter Bunny. It was a huge part of our childhood, and that was many years ago. Since then, other businesses have come and gone, but the library remained as a staple to the Joice community – a big part of the community. It's where city council meetings are held. Where breakfast is served before the annual Top of Iowa Car Show. Where community members and their kids go to check out books, use computers and meet up with friends.
We know the insurance will help, but likely not cover all expenses to rebuild. We ask for your help to help rebuild this pillar of our community. If you have money or books to donate... every little bit helps.
