Five-year-old Bennett Browning is a true fighter — a brave little boy whose strength, smile, and spirit continue to inspire everyone who knows him. On December 3rd, 2024, Bennett was diagnosed with Acute B Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), beginning a long and challenging journey that he faces with the same courage that has defined his life since birth.

Bennett is no stranger to hospitals and healing. Born with Down Syndrome and a congenital heart defect, he underwent major heart surgery as an infant and has spent countless days at the University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital for follow-ups and routine visits. Through it all, Bennett’s resilience has shone brightly — and his infectious smile continues to light up every room he enters.

Now, as he battles leukemia, Bennett is deep into a two-and-a-half-year treatment plan that includes rounds of intense, in-patient chemotherapy. He’s currently finishing the delayed intensification phase, the last intense stretch before he reaches maintenance. Over the past 11 months, Bennett has spent more than 120 days in the hospital, bravely enduring treatment after treatment while winning over the hearts of nurses, doctors, and staff. He’s made friends with everyone from residents to patient care techs, and though it will be bittersweet when he’s no longer a “frequent flier,” his family knows the best is yet to come.

When he’s not fighting like a champ, Bennett loves sprint car racing, animals, and spending time with his younger brother, with whom he shares an incredible bond. His favorite moments in the hospital are visits from the therapy dogs, who bring him comfort and joy — often helping him finally get some rest after long days of treatment.
