After 19-year-old Anthony Branca was killed by a distracted driver in 2014, his father Demetrius started the Anthony Phoenix Branca Foundation to raise awareness and educate people to end this deadly epidemic. Sadly, distracted driving and the havoc it wreaks have only gotten worse since Demetrius's son and best friend went under the wheels of that van.
"Grief is a strange thing," says Demetrius nine years after losing his child. "It robbed me of a happy life full of laughter, swallowed my world, and spit me out years later to deal with the aftermath. So I have been quiet for some time. I can finally say confidently that all of the important things in my life are in a good place, headed in the right direction, and picking up speed. That includes this mission to end distracted driving."
The Anthony Phoenix Branca Foundation is back in action. After working tirelessly with the Florida legislature, we are taking this national. Next, we head to Washington D.C. with hundreds of others who've lost loved ones at the hands of distracted drivers for a lobbying event to educate legislators about how to end this epidemic before they find themselves in the same position we are in. We are determined to change the culture around distracted driving the same way that groups before us have altered the culture around intoxicated driving and wearing seatbelts. There is no time to waste. The task ahead is not a small one, but it's our time and we are up for it.
This takes funding. Please consider donating to this cause and feel confident you've done your part to stop this deadly epidemic. We welcome donations in any amount, as well as a contribution of time.
Get ready. Join us. We can do this!
