Jerry and Rebecca, high school sweethearts, have shared a journey of love and companionship for more than half their lives. Their bond strengthened early in their marriage when Jerry committed to serve his country, enlisting as an active duty member in the Army. This commitment led him to serve for nearly a decade across three different duty stations. Together, they have raised a beautiful family, with two daughters who are now adults - Kaitlyn, a dedicated working mom, and Kelsy, who is nearing the completion of her college education to become a middle school math teacher. They are also blessed with an 8-month-old grandson, Tad, who brings joy and laughter into their lives. Rebecca, a pillar of strength and support, continues to work full-time, balancing her professional responsibilities while being a steadfast support for Jerry, accompanying him to his medical appointments and treatments.
In November 2022, Jerry faced a daunting challenge when he was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer. Seeking the best possible care, he was referred to a specialist in advanced-stage prostate cancer at UCSF in San Francisco. Together, they embarked on an aggressive treatment plan involving hormone therapy, radiation, and SBRT radiation targeting specific areas in the bones. However, a follow-up scan six months later delivered a heart-wrenching revelation: the cancer had not only resisted the treatment but had also spread to multiple areas, including both lungs. This marked a turning point, as it was determined that Jerry's cancer was hormone-resistant and incurable. Undeterred, Jerry and his medical team at UCSF pursued a new ray of hope: an experimental trial involving injected radiation designed to seek and attack cancer cells wherever they might be. These groundbreaking treatments require travel to UCSF every six weeks. While the trial covers some travel expenses, the financial burden remains significant, especially since Jerry has been unable to work since October. His 12 weeks of medical leave are nearing their end, adding to the financial strain.
To date, Jerry has undergone two treatments, with four more ahead. Each treatment is a step towards hope, a battle against time, and a testament to Jerry's unwavering strength. We remain optimistic that this trial will significantly slow the cancer's progression and continue to pray for a miraculous healing. This GoFundMe campaign is a call to support Jerry and his family during this challenging time, helping to ease the financial burden and allowing them to focus on treatment, recovery, and the precious moments they share as a family.
