Hi. My name is Darren Asby and I am the father of Kyle Asby.
Let’s beat cancer again!
This is the story of a boy who is a miracle. This is also the story of a man and his family who need another one.
When Kyle Asby was 13 years old, he was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma. He underwent multiple surgeries and chemotherapy, and had to learn to walk again due to neuropathy (painful nerves) in his feet from the chemo. Many days he couldn’t eat so he lost weight and muscle tone. But his cancer journey was a short one (compared to some of the friends he made on the oncology floor) and had a very successful outcome. On October 24, 2001, he was proclaimed cancer-free! Thank God for miracles and modern medicine!
However, chemotherapy isn’t without its own long-term side effects, one of which being other cancers later in life. On October 24, 2023, Kyle celebrated 22 years cancer-free! When he went in for an annual checkup, his physician suggested he get some new CT scans as a baseline, given his medical history and some back pain he had been having. The appointment was made in November but when he arrived at the imaging center, he was told that insurance had denied his request.
Fast forward to April 2024. Kyle visited an oral surgeon for wisdom teeth removal, but after doing a CT scan of his teeth, a mass was discovered in his right jaw. This led to biopsies and more scans, and on May 10, 2024, he was diagnosed with cancer yet again.
Kyle has neuroendocrine tumors in multiple places throughout his body: the jaw, his spine where a tumor has caused a compression fracture of the T7 vertebrae (explaining the back pain), a large mass in the left femur measuring 4x4x18cm, another in the right femur, his iliac bone and ischium, along with possible lymph node involvement throughout his body. Radiation treatment has already begun at the site of the largest tumor, and he meets with his oncology team at Moffitt Cancer Center on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, to learn the battle plans.
And this is where Kyle and his family need your help.
Kyle and his wife, Brittany, have 3 young children, ages 7, 2, and 6 months. Brittany is a nurse, so she has some understanding of what is ahead of them. Because of the spine fracture, Kyle is not able to lift anything (including his children) or drive due to the risk of spinal cord injury until he can undergo surgery to stabilize his spine. He will not be able to work while undergoing treatment, and the bills are already coming in. Brittany will be his primary caregiver throughout this so her availability to work will be limited.
Kyle is returning to Moffitt Cancer Center for treatment. He lives about 3 hours away so there will be weekly travel expenses, lodging and food expenses. This is all in addition to the medical expenses he will incur as a result of the chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries that are being planned as I type this. It’s going to be a very difficult and expensive journey.
Kyle and Brittany are the kind of people who are the first ones there when someone needs help. He and Brittany work hard to take care of their family and others around them. Asking for help is difficult for them, but the reality is it’s their turn to let others care for them.
Now here’s the good part: Kyle is strong. He has a lot of people depending on him, and he has a lot to fight for. He has kept his sense of humor, his positive attitude, and most importantly, his faith and belief that God heals.
Please help if you can, financially and through prayer.
*Updates on Kyle’s journey will be posted on https://www.caringbridge.org/ however, this is currently under construction and not available just yet.
