Hi, my name is Lily, and I’m a biologist and volunteer with Shark Stewards, a project of the Earth Island Institute. I’ve always loved ocean wildlife, especially sharks. Unfortunately, one-third of shark species are now threatened with extinction, including the soupfin shark (above), which relies on the San Francisco Bay as a pupping and nursery ground. That's why Im racing to save sharks at the San Francisco Half Marathon February 2nd!
Shark Stewards is dedicated to saving endangered sharks and protecting their habitats—from international waters to right here in the San Francisco Bay. I’m inspired by Shark Stewards’ dedication to protecting sharks in our Bay and around the world—a mission that is no easy task. Their work motivates me, and with so much uncertainty in the world, I wanted to do something meaningful to support this mission.
You can help by donating $1 a mile (or more!) and raise funds for Shark Stewards, increase awareness and the health of our Bay and ocean. Shark Stewards is offering gifts including original prints of sharks at $500, and a framed original painting at $1000! Donations will go to purchasing water quality monitoring instrumentation, and tracking and preventing disease in Bay Area shark populations.
Thank you for supporting my run for the sharks! I promise to give you updates and you can follow live on Instagram.
