Meet Avery and Drew Russell. On June 11th, 2024, their lives were irrevocably altered when Avery suffered a vicious attack by two pit bulls. The attack left Avery with severe injuries, including the complete loss of her left ear, partial loss of her right ear, a fracture in her left mastoid, extensive facial damage to both cheeks, and significant trauma to her nose. Additionally, she sustained multiple puncture wounds to her neck and shoulders. Reynoldsburg Police Department and Truro Township Fire Department swiftly responded and provided life-saving measures including rushing Avery to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

At Nationwide Children’s Hospital, medical professionals sprang into action to stabilize Avery’s critical condition. Avery was sedated, paralyzed, intubated, and placed on a ventilator to protect her airway and assist with breathing. She received an urgent blood transfusion to combat her acute blood loss. Avery spent 7 days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in critical condition, undergoing multiple surgeries to address her gruesome injuries.

On June 18th, Avery was transferred to a step-down unit at the hospital, where her recovery continues. While the full scope of her future medical needs remains uncertain, it is clear that Avery will require multiple surgeries and procedures to reconstruct her face and ears.

Drew Russell, Avery’s mother, has been an unwavering presence by her side. Drew is a single mother and a self-employed manicurist, the primary provider for her family. Since the attack, she has dedicated herself entirely to caring for Avery, unable to work and facing tremendous financial strain. Drew’s strength and love for her daughter are awe-inspiring, but she needs our help.

Witnessing the profound impact this tragedy has had on Avery and Drew, the members of Local 2932, Truro Township Firefighters, have been inspired by their strength and resilience. To support them during this challenging time, we have launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for their immediate financial needs and future medical expenses that may not be covered by insurance.

As a father, I empathize deeply with Avery’s mother. I can only imagine the emotional trauma, the anxiety about Avery’s future, and the financial stress she is experiencing. I hope that as you read this, you will be moved to join Local 2932 in supporting this family. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference in Avery and Drew's lives.

On behalf of Avery, Drew, and the members of Local 2932, we sincerely appreciate your generosity and support.
