Join Mason's Fight for Recovery

This last year has been difficult for the Madden family, particularly for their middle son, Mason.

After a hockey injury last year, Mason was having difficulty with a full recovery. Unexplained pain and loss of appetite led to coordination issues and weakness. No one could figure out why.

Within the last several months his symptoms grew even more concerning with increased weakness and weight loss. This past week, the decision was made by a team of doctors to have Mason admitted to DeVos Children’s Hospital where they ran many tests in search of answers.

During these tests at DeVos, Mason shared that he had been having numbness in his toes and legs. The doctors ordered an MRI and immediately found a tumor on Mason’s spine which led to an emergency surgery where the tumor was removed.

This discovery and procedure were much-needed answers, but Mason now has a long road to recovery as their family supports him in healing and all the additional treatments he will face. For 48 hours Mason will be immobile, then after that he will be able to have some small phases of movement. He will then be in the ICU for 5 days, eventually moving to the inpatient Mary Free-bed facility. The recovery at Mary Free-bed will take anywhere from 3 weeks up to 10 weeks.
