Having a new baby should be a joyous time. We never think the rare occurrence of birth at 27 weeks gestation will happen to us. However, that is what happened when Nickolas Daniel Jones was born at 1 lb. 11 oz on April 9, 2024.
Nickolas is fortunate to have two parents who are young but mature and responsible. Dominic turned 21 years old just three days before his birth. He is a US Marine reservist and Federal Security Guard planning to build his career in law enforcement. Nicole is 19 and a student at Olympic College planning to build her career as a RN. They are dedicated to public service and their new son.
Unfortunately, Dominic does not qualify for any form of paid leave because he has only been with his current employer for six months. As a federal employee in the shipyard, his military training time did not count. In addition, federal employees do not qualify for Washington's Paid Family Medical Leave.
In addition to loss of their income to stay at Nickolas' bedside, they are commuting between their home and the hospital with additional costs for gas and tolls, and they must eat out because there is no food allowed in his room at Mary Bridge. Nickolas' care will also cost a lot in co-insurance and deductibles. Additionally, they were unable to have a baby shower or purchase most things Nickolas needs because he was 13 weeks early.
They will be setting up a registry soon for those who would like to help. But any financial support you could offer would be most appreciated as well. They deserve to be supported through this emergency which could not have been prevented as they give so much to others in their professional and personal lives. Nickolas deserves to have his parents present and attentive so he can grow and heal with their love and care.
Prayers are welcomed too! Nickolas will be a miracle and a leader one day. He comes from a long line of fighters, and as always it is the community that provides the magic for resilience. Thank you in advance for your prayers and support!
