Guam’s liberation holds significant historical and cultural importance for Guam and our people. During World War II,Guam, was occupied by Japanese forces in December 1941. The occupation lasted for two and a half years, during which the local Chamorro people endured hardships, including forced labor, imprisonment, and deprivation of basic necessities.
On July 21, 1944, U.S. forces landed on Guam to liberate the island from Japanese control. The Battle of Guam ensued, resulting in fierce fighting as American troops pushed back the occupying forces. After weeks of intense combat, Guam’s liberation was officially recognized as July 21, 1944.
The liberation marked the end of Japanese rule and the restoration of Guam's status as a U.S. territory. It was a moment of great joy and relief for the Chamorro people, who had endured tremendous suffering during the occupation. The liberation also served as a catalyst for Guam's modern development and identity, shaping the island's culture, politics, and society in profound ways.
To commemorate the liberation, Guam celebrates Liberation Day every year on July 21st with parades, ceremonies, and cultural events. It is a time for reflection, remembrance, and celebration of the island's resilience and the sacrifices made by its people during World War II. The liberation of Guam remains a pivotal chapter in the island's history, reminding its residents of the importance of freedom, unity, and perseverance.
