Dear kind souls,
My name is Erika, and I find myself reaching out to you with a heart heavy yet hopeful, a tale woven with the threads of love and anguish. For within the fabric of our lives, there lies a precious soul, my beloved Sebastian, affectionately known as Bashy B.

Sebastian Edward Bernardini entered this world on a crisp January day in 2020, a beacon of joy illuminating our lives with his presence. (It also happened to be his Papa's birthday.)
His arrival brought forth a symphony of hope and dreams, a promise of a future brimming with possibilities. Little did we know, within the tender folds of his innocence, lay a journey fraught with trials and tribulations, a path laden with uncertainty and adversity.

As the world around us swirled with chaos, Sebastian's laughter filled our home, a melody of pure delight that danced amidst the shadows of uncertainty. With each passing day, our darling Bashy B grew, his spirit vibrant and his heart pure. Yet, beneath his radiant exterior, a silent storm brewed, threatening to engulf our world in its tempestuous embrace.

The days unfolded into months, and Sebastian's once hearty appetite waned, replaced by the cruel specter of illness that lurked within his fragile frame. Despite our fervent prayers and tireless efforts, his tiny form became a battleground, a battleground where hope waged war against despair, and love stood as our guiding light amidst the encroaching darkness.

In the midst of our trials, we embarked on a journey, a journey that led us to the sun-kissed shores of Florida, a land of newfound promise and fleeting respite. Yet, even amidst the tranquil beauty of our new home, Sebastian's affliction persisted, a relentless foe that refused to yield to our pleas for mercy.

Days turned into nights, and nights into weeks, as we stood vigil by Sebastian's side, our hearts heavy with worry and fear. The halls of hospitals became our second home, their sterile embrace offering little solace in the face of our son's suffering.

It was during one such hospital stay that we received news that shattered the fragile veneer of hope that had sustained us thus far. Sebastian's tiny body bore the burden of heavy metals, silent sentinels of toxicity that ravaged his delicate constitution. In the wake of this revelation, our world crumbled, as the weight of uncertainty bore down upon us with an unrelenting force.

Yet, even amidst the darkness that threatened to consume us, a flicker of hope remained, a beacon of light that illuminated our path forward. For in the depths of despair, we found solace in the unwavering support of our community, a community bound together by love and compassion.

With each passing day, Sebastian's journey continues, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love to overcome even the greatest of adversities. And though the road ahead may be fraught with challenges, we walk it with heads held high, guided by the unwavering belief that love will always prevail.

As we stand on the precipice of uncertainty, we humbly reach out to you, dear friends, with a plea for help and support. For in your kindness lies the promise of a brighter tomorrow, where Sebastian's laughter will once again ring out amidst the gentle whispers of hope.

Thank you, from the depths of our hearts, for your love, your prayers, and your unwavering support. Together, we will stand strong, united in our resolve to see Sebastian through his darkest hour and into the light of a new dawn.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Erika and the Bernardini Family <3

We are now facing our 5th hospital admission in less than two years. Last time, Drs left us with a few more questions than actual answers. And so this time, we are at another children's hospital seeking another opinion and more eyes on our son's medical care. My son still does not have a clear G.I. diagnosis, but he is 24/7 dependent on a gtube/feeding tube. He has a disorder commonly seen in children with autism called Rumination. He throws up, a lot. Sometimes he throws up so much that he completely depletes all of his nutrition and hydration and we are in an emergency situation where we need to act fact and get him I.V. fluids STAT. It is absolutely terrifying how quickly he can deplete himself.
We also still do not have an official dx for autism either. Which means, we are still not able to get so many services that Sebastian needs, including ABA. This fund will be used to help our family get Sebastian the care and medical devices he needs that are not covered by his medical insurance. It will assist with travel costs to appts, and ensuring our boy is comfortable and happy.
At home we struggle with safe sleep, because Bash like to climb and elope. He also has to have his gtube feed running through the night, so Mom goes with about 3 hours sleep a night to ensure his safety.
Our goal is to raise enough to purchase Sebastian a #cubbybed. A medical bed used for children just like our boy. This would keep him enclosed, and provide him with security and the solitude he requires at times of over stimulation.
We may also be at a point with our medical team, where we need to begin seeking 2nd and 3rd opinions. Who knows, if it calls for it.. I will drive this boy from Florida to Boston and around the world, to see others and get a broader perspective and more eyes on this case.
Finally I would like to add an important piece to Sebastian's story. A little over a year ago, we paid out of pocket for a PCP and for third party lab testing for heavy metals. Sebastian has tested positive for three types of heavy metals in his tiny body, and we have no answer as to why. If you research what arsenic, tin and antimony do in the human body, you'll get a list of symptoms similar to what my 4 yr old experiences daily. We know for a fact that heavy metals in the body can cause toxicity and present the same G.I. symptoms that he presents.
We are currently and actively in one of the greatest fights of our life, ensuring our little guy gets all the support and resources that he needs to thrive. Thank you in advanced for your love, your shares, your prayers and good vibes. We are grateful for them all.
Our goal is to raise awareness around Sebastian's medical unknowns, and attract the medical team that has the awareness and is currently studying the various things that aren't only affecting my child, but so many other children who are being labeled as "covid babies".
It is no secret what has happened in this industry, and companies need to be held accountable!
