Shawn LeBlanc was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on 5/27/23 after months of symptoms that only grew worse, while she searched for answers. After a 40 night stay in the hospital fighting for her life, Shawn and her husband Bryan were finally able to return back to their home in Colorado together. What should have been a time of rest and relaxation, quickly became a time of more stress in an already stressful situation. Medical bills began piling in immediately through Shawn’s patient portal and dinging in through her phone.
To say Bryan and Shawn have had a rough path leading up to her diagnosis would be a gross understatement. Shortly before moving to Colorado, they both faced extreme medical complications, in which both had emergency hospital stays and procedures. The two were just getting situated in Colorado when Bryan’s job in which they moved for went under. They were suddenly in unfamiliar land, without family, and had no income. Being a strong team, they didn’t let this keep them down. They pushed through. Shawn began teaching again and it didn’t take long for Bryan to land a job and begin working again. This however left a considerable amount of financial strain on them, all the while wanting to return home to Louisiana where their people were- especially their first granddaughter!
Determined to get home to The Boot, the two had a plan in place that would have them back home in July. For good. Sadly, cancer had other plans. The only silver lining is that they happen to be near one of the best hospitals for her exact type of cancer! They are now in the fight for Shawn’s life. The cost alone that it costs to fight this beast is astronomical and only continues to rise.
I beg of you to donate. Donate anything. Even a dollar makes a difference. Donate so that they can focus on her fight of healing and less on being able to afford the treatments that will heal her. They should not have to do this alone! They are two of the most giving, kind, and genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I don’t know why bad things happen to good people, but I know they are deserving of all of the support the world has to offer right now.
1 John 3:17
But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?
To give an idea of costs they are already facing or costs quickly approaching I have compiled a list. A list of numbers that are their responsibility AFTER insurance has already been involved.
* Medication- $650 a week= $31,200 a year. This number alone is enough to send someone into a panic.
* ER Diagnosis- Shawn’s emergency room visit and diagnoses cost them $561 instead of the $100 it normally would have been.
* Pre Treatment for Transplant- $350 times 2. That’s $700 just to prepare her body!
* Hotel- Leaving out what they’ve already compiled in a very long hospital stay, Shawn will have to stay a hour near the hospital for a month after her transplant. Add in another month shall she need both types as they believe she will. When looking at hotels to accommodate a month long stay it averages $5,820 PER MONTH.
* Chemotherapy- Most cancer patients need it, so they’ll charge every cent they can! This alone can end up adding up to about $24,000.
* Transplant- Transplant costs for out of pocket can vary greatly, but the cost can be extraordinary.
