Join Tom Williams' Fight Against Cancer

Cancer is a diagnosis you never want in your family. Yet, every year we're effected by it one way or another.

My dad, Thomas Williams, was driving his semi on the south side of Chicago when his life changed forever. He was hit with intense pain that gave him no option but to call an ambulance—if you know Tom, you know that was some painful stuff. Tom spent a week in the hospital in Harvey, Illinois and there they found aggressive cancerous tumors in his abdomen area. I was there when the surgeon said the diagnosis, as casual as saying what his lunch plans were. But for us, it was a bombshell that left us in utter shock, confusion, and denial.

Tom was out of network for insurance and setup with a company that only covered preventative services (not what they thought). He stacked up the bills quickly while learning that he would be forced into early retirement. We scoured and applied for any assistance we could and are looking for support of any kind—prayers, donations, anything is unconditionally appreciated.

A story I remember about my dad: When I was young, on one our beloved trips to Menards, we were in the parking lot with our bag of goods. My dad looked at the receipt and noticed he wasn't charged for an item, so he went back in to pay for it. It was that impression, along with many others of him giving to those in need, that made me the giving man I am today. "Pay it forward and be there for others when you can," Tom says.

Tom will be starting chemotherapy treatment soon. While he kicks this cancer's butt, we are getting projects done in preparation for the worst, while hoping for the best. I am blessed to have the opportunity to be there with him and help where I can—roofing, trimming trees, etc. Tom is making the best of this hurdle and spending as much time in "The Woods" (his happy place) with his animals and loving, supporting wife Peggy.
