Join Us in Aiding Susan and Kevin's Recovery

Beloved small business owners and Virginia natives Susan and Kevin Whitehurst were the targets of a terrible incident at the end of September. The couple has owned the Cleaning Service Company since 1992. They currently employ 18 people and have received the award for Best in Williamsburg in 2008. They are great figures of their community having raised 3 children while running their self-started business. They also worked local part-time jobs, Susan having been front of house staff at La Tienda for 7 years and Kevin having just started working for the City of Williamsburg at Waller Mill Park a few months prior to the incident. The couple's children aged 20, 23 and 25 are all working to be members of their communities. Age 25 is currently in medical school with aspirations to become a doctor. Age 23 has recently purchased a house in the Lee Hall Area with aspirations to become a carpenter. Age 20 is currently studying at a local Virginia Institute with aspirations to be a writer. Kevin and Susan have the kind of traits we want from people in our community of Williamsburg.

They have both given so much help to our community and now they need help.

The couple have requested that they do not want people to donate if they do not have the means. All donations would go to helping with hospital bills, legal fees and lost income for at least the next 10 weeks while they are on strict bed rest. Unfortunately, we are unsure of whether the couple will get compensated fairly due to the driver being unlicensed and the vehicle being uninsured.

Below are the details of the incident; they are generally not graphic, but may be hard to read especially if you know Kevin and Susan personally.

On the night of Saturday, September 28th 2024, Susan and Kevin Whitehurst were struck by a white minivan.

At around 9:30pm on the 28th, Susan and Kevin decided to get some snacks at Harris Teeter for a movie night. Unfortunately, as they were loading the last of their groceries into the trunk of their car, a crazed individual who had been “hunting” the parking lot for at least an hour had chosen to target the couple. After circling the lane the driver aimed their car for Susan and Kevin and stepped on the gas. The police believe the car was able to speed upwards of 35 to 40 miles per hour before impact. The vehicle made first impact with Susan, soon followed by Kevin, and lastly their Ford Fiesta. When the officers had arrived Susan was found on the other side of the Fiesta. She was lifted over the car by the force of impact. Kevin, the shopping cart, and their personal belongings were found within a 20-foot radius from the crash.

The driver immediately reversed his car and fled the scene. One witness called 911 and sat with Susan and Kevin until help arrived. Another good samaritan ran by foot after the vehicle to obtain the license plate information. The driver of the vehicle was quickly apprehended by the police.

Both Susan and Kevin were rushed to the Trauma Care Unit at the Newport News Riverside hospital with severe injuries. They sustained multiple injuries including broken/fractured bones, sprains, scrapes, and a surgical screw from a childhood procedure Kevin had sticking out of his elbow. They have both undergone surgery to remove the bone shards and stabilize what is left. Susan’s leg is broken in 2 locations and her pelvis fractured in 4. She had surgery to stabilize her hip/pelvis/lower back and now has 3 twelve inch screws holding it all together. Kevin’s leg was broken in multiple locations, he too underwent surgery and now has a metal plate and screws stabilizing his leg.

Thanks to the swift response from the witnesses and our local emergency responders, both Susan and Kevin are miraculously alive. However, the road to recovery is long and far from over. The doctors and surgeons have stated that with proper care, they should both be able to regain the ability to walk. However, it will be over 10 weeks before they can put any weight on their legs/hips.

THIS WAS NO ACCIDENT

The driver stated to police, “I wanted to hurt someone and when I saw those two people, I decided they were the ones I wanted to hurt.”

Thank you to everybody who has been there supporting them thus far. We will be posting updates as the recovery process continues. Once again, thank you all and God bless.
