A Call for Help for Heather: Three Years of Struggle with Long Haul COVID

I want to preface this by saying that Heather does not know about this fundraiser and is not asking for money. As her sister, I’m taking this step to support her during an incredibly difficult time.

Three years ago, my sister Heather’s life was turned upside down.

At the time, she had just bought and remodeled her dream home, was finalizing her licensure to become a foster parent, and was only two weeks away from traveling to Uganda for our brother’s wedding. However, everything changed when she contracted COVID-19. What started as a short illness quickly turned into weeks, then months of relentless health struggles. Eventually, she was diagnosed with long haul COVID, a condition that continues to steal her strength and disrupt her life.

Today, three years later, Heather still faces daily challenges, including chronic weakness, nerve and joint pain, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, and chronic brain fog. Sadly, these persistent symptoms forced her to leave her career as a NICU nurse, a job she loved for 15 years and despite her best efforts, she was denied disability benefits because there wasn’t enough scientific evidence linking COVID to long-term health issues.

In an effort to make ends meet, Heather has sold many of her possessions, including her car, and has not had a steady income since 2021. She started a photography business in 2023, but despite her best efforts, it wasn’t enough to sustain her. Just recently, she had to close it.

Now, Heather is seeking help. She’s trying to see a specialist who understands the complexities of long haul COVID, but the costs are overwhelming.
