Update 2/18
This past week has been an eventful week
Skylar’s praise this week has been that she can now eat puréed food and is enjoying her meals. She is also now able to pull herself up unassisted and hold herself standing
Skylar had G-tube surgery on Sunday as she is still aspirating her liquids, but we are hopeful that this will be temporary for her. She has an estimated release date of 2/26 for outpatient therapy
Scout’s praise for the week was her successful transfer to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte to be reunited with her sister! She has been attending approximately 3 hours of therapy of day and working really hard to get her strength back.
It’s really amazing the work they have her doing and to see her responding. Scout has an estimated release date of 3/11 for outpatient therapy
Please continue to pray for our sweet babies, we could use continued prayers during this time of healing and an extra special prayer for our Scout ❤️
Update 2/8
Skylar finished her first week of rehabilitation at Levine and she is doing amazing! She is growing stronger every day and her therapists are very impressed with her progress. She attended a dog show in the lobby of the hospital and met all the therapy dogs which was right up her alley. With the help of her therapist, she even walked across the lobby to get back to the elevator! She is making great progress on walking and re-learning how to eat.
Skylar is beginning to find her voice and has said a few words this week!
She is the happiest baby and greets us with a smile every time we walk in the room. Her estimated discharge date is Feb 21st!
Scout is continuing to keep her eyes open about 1/4 of the way during the day and is responding well in her daily therapy! They have been working on putting weight back on her feet and legs and getting her strength back. She will be transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital on Tuesday to start her in-house rehabilitation. We continue to pray that our Scout comes back to us!
While watching both babies in therapy you can see the fight and determination they both have. They are working so hard, even if they don’t realize it! They are not giving up, they struggle and they fight and they are little warriors! Please keep them in your prayers! ❤️
We are excited for the girls to be back together again, and we look forward to their continued healing!
1/30 update
Skylar was transferred today to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte and will begin her therapy tomorrow. She will spend several hours each day in Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy for the next few weeks. These will be hard days, but we know she can do it, she is one tough little baby! We have seen such improvement in Skylar over the last couple of weeks that we are very hopeful for her recovery.
The goal is to transition Scout to the same facility within the next week or so. She is still not awake but is now more responsive and more purposeful with her movements.
They did require Scout to have a G-tube and that surgery was successfully done today. While Scout is still at Brenner’s hospital she will continue to get therapy and gain the strength she needs to transition to Levine and be back with her sister!
The hospitals are 1.5 hours apart from each other so we will be on rotating shifts.
We could use continued prayers for Scout to wake up, for Scout and Skylar’s therapy sessions, continued healing, and for safe travels! Thank you so very much for your continued prayers and support for our family!
With love,
The Harmons❤️
1/26 update
Please keep the prayers coming!!
Scout is so close to waking up we can feel it! She is becoming more responsive and moving more each day! Squeezing our hand and letting us know she hears us!
Skylar is doing well in therapy and will transfer to Levines Children’s center soon! Although it will be hard to have the girls separated, Skylar is ready for these next steps in her recovery!
Both girls had another set of MRI’s and the swelling is gone with no additional damage compared to the last test, which is great news! Because ANE is so rare and there aren’t many protocols to go by, we will be taking their recovery day by day!
We believe in the power of prayer and are so grateful for all of our family members and friends who are continuing to keep us in your thoughts and prayers!
Update 1/15
Shortly after both girls were admitted to the hospital, they were diagnosed with Acute Necrotizing Encephalitis (ANE), a rare and life- threatening brain disease that occurs after a viral infection and which causes rapid onset of neurological symptoms, including seizures.
Skylar is in intermediate care, right outside the PICU unit and receiving intensive therapy.
Scout is still in the PICU working on getting extubated, she is still unresponsive but we are seeing small movements in her more and more each day- we believe all our prayers are working!
This is going to be a very long journey for these girls and for our family with life changing effects. We ask for continued prayers, especially for little Scout, we need this baby to regain consciousness ❤️. Thank you so much for your continued support, love and prayers! The Harmon Family
Life has thrown us an ugly curveball. We are overwhelmed with worry and could really use your prayers and your help.
Just a few days ago, my 18-month old great nieces were thriving, healthy, happy, energetic toddlers. We spent time with them over the Christmas holiday and enjoyed watching them play with the dogs and their new toys. They are so much fun to be around.
They were both admitted medically unresponsive to the PICU at Brenners Children’s hospital in NC fighting for their lives.
This is a harrowing, fluid situation that is breaking our hearts. Their doctor’s main goal at this time is to keep them alive. It is possible that they will not be the same girls we knew at Christmas time.
Their dad, Chase, Cheryl and Jeff’s son, is staying strong for his girls, but he needs our assistance. He works for a car dealership and will be out of work for the foreseeable future to be with and care for the girls. When we get our miracle, he will likely face financial difficulties in the future, as this condition is known to cause long-lasting side effects after recovery.
If you feel called to help Chase, Scout, and Skylar with a donation, we would be most grateful. Thank you for considering.
