This is Madison (Maddy) and her Handler, Andrew. We were fortunate enough to meet them in month of September, 2024, while we were conducting investigations in Louisa County. Maddy is trained in Search and Rescue operations. Maddy has been training with the Greater Atlantic Rescue Dogs since 2013. She and Andrew have volunteered countless hours with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, responding to over 100 missions statewide. During at least one search, she found a subject in critical condition, which led to their lives being saved by Maddy and Andrew.
After assisting in an operation with the Louisa County Sheriff's Office, it became apparent that Maddy had become ill. After an urgent trip to the Emergency Veterinarian, it was evident that Maddy had ingested a harmful substance. Maddy stayed overnight to have her vitals monitored. The following morning, we received the news that Maddy's kidneys were failing. Eventually she went home to spend her final days with her family. Sadly, Maddy's life had come to an end on September 20, 2024.
The Sheriff's Office would like to take a moment to say thank you, Maddie, for your services to our community and many others. We are deeply saddened the loss of dedicated hero.
As Andrew and Maddie are both volunteers, her loss will also be the financial responsibility of Andrew. We are hoping to assist in that matter by asking that our community supports them as they have supported us.
