Join Yolanda McKinney's Fight

In January of 2020 Ms. McKinney was diagnosed with breast cancer. She is facing this challenge head-on with some of the best surgeons and oncologists Portland has to offer. In March of this year, Ms. McKinney will undergo a bilateral mastectomy. She will require two months off work to heal from the surgery and undergo radiation.
While Ms. McKinney has excellent benefits through PPS, she does not have enough sick leave to cover her time out of the classroom. She is applying for additional leave through the PPS teacher sick leave bank, but the amount allotted will not cover the extensive leave she needs to take. This means taking an unknown number of unpaid days.
Many families and teachers in the Sabin community have asked how they might be able to help. We are hoping we might be able to ease Ms. McKinney's stress with this fundraiser to cover expenses for her family. Yolanda and Felton have three beautiful children. Her two eldest children were Sabin students (and had Ms. Foster as their kindergarten teacher!). They are now students at De La Salle North High School. In addition, they have a toddler and may incur extra childcare expenses while Yolanda is attending appointments. We would like her family to not have to worry about providing for basics while on a limited income, and instead focus all their energy on healing and being together.
Yolanda is a dedicated teacher. She has been teaching at Sabin since 2013, and also completed her teaching practicum at Sabin. If you've ever had the gift of Ms. McKinney as your child's teacher, you know how special she is. Ms. McKinney holds high expectations and rules her classroom with a fierce and loving heart. In her own words, "my favorite thing about teaching is seeing the excitement on my student's face when they accomplish something they thought they couldn't."
