Kristina is a healthy toddler who loves to run, play and sing. Unfortunately she suddenly fell ill and was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. As a result she was taken to the hospital and was a patient in the ICU for a few weeks. Now that she is medically stable she is at a children’s hospital for intensive inpatient rehabilitation. She will be at inpatient rehabilitation for another 4-5 weeks.
The swelling in her brain from the meningitis damaged some important areas of her brain, the corpus callosum and thalamus. The corpus callosum is the area of the brain that connects the right and left sides and allows for communication between sides of the brain. The thalamus relays sensory and motor (muscle movement) signals from the body to the rest of the brain. The neurologist is hopeful that the neurological damage will not be permanent, but she will have a long road ahead full of hard work. She also has complete hearing loss in both ears. Fortunately she was a candidate for cochlear implants, so she will be able to regain her hearing and learn to speak and communicate with a lot of work and effort.
As you can imagine, having a child this sick is worrisome and stressful. Although there is insurance coverage, all of the medical expenses will not be covered. Anything that can be done to alleviate this family’s burden is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers and assistance.
