Jonathan Cle Hill is an American who is married to a Filipina and has lived in the Philippines for 16 years. Two years ago he started having pain in his back and lower extremities. He saw several doctors and was given pain medications.
December of last year, he went to the ER for a stubbed toe that did not heal. After a couple more visits to the ER and two hospitalizations, he was diagnosed with severe peripheral arterial occlusive disease. By then, it was too late to save his left leg as gangrene has set in and and a lymph node exploded in his groin. His leg has been amputated and is healing well, but his infection in the groin area is still being treated and a cause for concern.
Due to two previous hospitalizations, his insurance have been exhausted. After 9 days in the hospital, he has to buy his medicine outside as the hospital stopped dispensing the meds he needs. In the Philippines, hospitals can withhold medicines and other medical services when the bill has reached a certain amount which has happened in this case.
His wife was diagnosed with Stage 4 Olfactory Neuroblastoma 5 years ago and up to now, they are still paying for the astronomical debts that her treatment had incurred. Jon’s previous two hospitalizations further put them in debt.
