On December 11th my son had a Stroke of the Spine leaving him as a quadriplegic. This type of stroke is very rare especially to young adults such as my son (19 years old). He was at BAMC for a month and after numerous tests and research the doctors could not give us an answer as to how it exactly happened. However, they are hopeful with rehabilitation my son’s function will likely come back. From BAMC he was transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston, TX where they specialize in rehabilitation for spinal injuries. Even though he was only there for six weeks his achievements were grand for his predicament. The functions gained at TIRR were in a sense minimal but celebrated as huge successes. Every doctor, nurse, therapist, and other hospital staff told us his journey would be long but our fight for his recovery has not wavered. As well, every staff member encountered at both BAMC and TIRR were wonderful. We couldn’t have asked for better care.
On February 22, he was released from TIRR to came home and is still making progress, however our home is not equipped for his condition. So, on May 4, we are hosting a fundraiser, selling chicken/sausage plates. The money we raise will cover his medical bills, medical supplies, building better/safer access into our home, and creating a bathroom to handicap standards. As well, for those who can’t attend the plate sell a GoFundMe page has been created for any donation. Although its only been three months since the stroke, our journey for his recovery has been long.
I have about a dozen people who volunteered to sell tickets. If you would like to just to donate, we are accepting donations through this event site. My son, my family and myself thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
