In memory of Joseph A. McDaniel

On Friday, June 21st, 2024, we lost our beloved son and brother, Joseph Augustine McDaniel, at the age of 30. This loss follows that of his father, Denis, who died in January 2021 due to ALS.

Joseph — Joe to those close to him — was an incredible intellect whose passion for learning and teaching took him all around the continent: from his home in West Vancouver, where he graduated from WVSS and led salmon preservation efforts with the Streamkeepers, to teaching with the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales in the northeastern United States, to working with Indigenous communities amid the rivers and mountains of northern BC. Although he suffered from the effects of trauma and mental illness, he faced his struggles with courage. He was a profoundly moral person whose strong sense of justice and commitment to his Catholic faith shone like a beacon to everyone who met him. Most of all, though, he was deeply loved. His loss will leave a permanent mark on our lives.

We, Joe’s family, are organizing this GoFundMe to assist with the costs of giving Joe the farewell he deserves. The proceeds of this fundraiser will go towards funeral and burial costs, easing some of the burden on the family during this extremely difficult time.

Joe was a humble person who saw the value and meaning in even the smallest actions. Anything you can contribute, no matter how small, is deeply appreciated. Thank you so much for your support and love.
