On March 5th, 2024, the world lost a kind and loving family man, Joshua Leroy Kemp. Words cannot describe the heavy loss I feel as Joshua’s only daughter, but there is no other way to cope than to face this reality head-on along with my two brothers (Joshua Jr. and Gerson Kemp)and my mother (Natalia Kemp).

My father started his life on February 28, 1960, in Fort Myers, Florida, the sixth born in a family of eleven kids. Since a very young age, Joshua could best be described as a social butterfly, always engaging in conversation and making new friends along the way. He always made time for his own family and ensured that every minute spent with them was joyous and happy.

Eventually, my father would move from Florida in 1986 to San Pedro, California, to begin a new chapter in his life. There, he found work as a jet fueler at LAX and raised his family with my mother. Growing up, my father placed a deep importance on having a strong spiritual background and education. He would occasionally preach at the church we attended, ‘La Amistad,’ and lead our youth program.

In 2006, he suffered a stroke while at work and was taken to the hospital, where he went into a coma for 2 days. When he woke up from his coma, he had lost most of his memory and developed a speech impediment, which affected his ability to communicate. This event brought our family closer together as we devoted ourselves to caring for him, ensuring his well-being and comfort despite the challenges.
